⭕️ How We Raised $13,000 in 5 hours
plus 10 new opportunities
Hey there,
As I mentioned on last week’s newsletter, we launched a fundraiser with Sam Demma to buy football equipment for a group we met on our speaking tour in Kenya.
Our initial goal was to raise $3000.
We ended up raising $13,000. This was no coincidence.
We followed a step-by-step playbook made by our friend Timmy the Dreamer - who’s raised millions of dollars before.

Opportunities This Week
Deep Dive: Fundraising Playbook
Step 1: Set a Specific Goal
Think about how much money you need for the first iteration of the project.
For us, although we knew we want to do more - we set a very specific goal for a very specific project.
Our goal was to raise $3000 to buy 30 students football equipment (shoes, balls, etc) at Chiptenye High School.
Step 2: Create a Donation Page
This doesn’t have to be complicated. You can use platforms like GoFund me (or it’s local equivalent to do this).
Note: Make sure you use a platform that doesn’t take a percentage of the money raised.
Step 3: Create a Compelling Video
Make a 60-90s video outlining the 5 W’s - Who, What, Where, Why, When and How of your project.
Post the video on every social media platform you have.
Here’s ours for inspiration:
Step 4: Leverage Family and Friends
Your initial money is going to come from your closest circle.
Personally message every single person close to you and share with them the donation page and video.
People are more likely to donate to something that other people have supported.
Step 5: Create an Interactive Progress Visual
This has a psychological effect called the goal gradient effect.
Knowing that people are making progress, people are more likely to continue with a task especially as the completion point nears.
Having a progress bar gives people a visual representation that creates certainty, engages people and increases their motivation to reach the end.
Step 6: Publicly Share Every Donation
We are all social beings and love being validated publicly.
For every donation you receive, post and tag the person that donated on your story.
This not only gives people validation, it shows progress and creates FOMO.
For us, we created a Dreams D’or (inspired by the Ballon D’or Football award) where we wrote the names of every single donor and posted it.
Step 7: Leverage Matching
Think about the most successful, wealthy and giving people you know.
Once you reach the halfway point of your call, reach out to them in public or private and ask them to match whatever you raised to reach your goal.
For us, when we hit 5k - we made a video on our Insta story asking Dan Martell to put his money where his mouth is and match what we raised.
A couple minutes later, he reposts the story and captions it “I’m in 👊🏻”.
Step 8: Follow Through
Once you’ve hit your goal, make sure you make a post letting everyone know you hit the goal and thanking them for their support.
If you can, personally send a message/email to everyone that made a donation.
What’s most important is then giving transparent updates on how you used the money and give a breakdown on the impact of the project.
My friend, the last few weeks on this speaking tour I have had so many life changing experiences. We’ve interacted with some amazing people, seen some of the toughest challenges and have worked so hard to try and give back where we can.
I feel so much gratitude to have the opportunity to do work like this and this wouldn’t have been possible without you, friend. Thank you for giving me a shot and believing in me as I go on this journey
Sending you good vibes from East Africa,
With love,
